NEET UG counselling: build a choice list before you lock it

NEET UG 2026 counselling began on August 5, and the choice-filling stage will determine which colleges remain available to many candidates. A good rank can still produce a poor outcome if the list is rushed or the rules are misunderstood.

The counselling structure includes the 15 per cent All India Quota, AIIMS, JIPMER, central and deemed universities, as well as state-quota processes. Candidates should compare the Medical Counselling Committee calendar with their state schedule before choosing upgrade or exit options.

A practical choice list can have three layers: dream colleges slightly above the candidate’s likely range, realistic colleges within it and a safety net of institutions where the rank has historically been competitive.

Round-one free exit does not mean every later decision is reversible. In the second round, leaving an allotted seat can affect the security deposit, so candidates should list only colleges they would genuinely consider.

Names, dates of birth and spelling must match across documents. Candidates should keep the allotment letter, NEET documents, school certificates and category records ready before reporting.
